Budgie Stained Glass Fence and Trellis
Sep. 17th, 2021 09:26 amYesterday was a low energy day for me. I wasn't able to do much but I tried to tidy up inside the house. My room has been a mess since the roof project was done earlier this year. I love my clear white cieling and because of that I have not wanted to poke holes in it and put back all the stuff I had hanging. This includes my beloved blue wind chimes (did I ever show those?) And also my lovely stained glass sun catcher of Phage the budgie. I'm going to post that pic now because it tells three stories in one photo and I didn't realize til I was resizing it just now.

You guys remember this budgie? This was made using my artwork. I'm very proud of that. Since I didn't want to hang him back in my room I'm glad he finally has found a place on our east window. I had thought about putting him on the sliding glass door. That's where I had that little yellow bird. But it's a north window behind a patio so light really does not come through. In my room it's a south window but my back is turned to it most of the day so I don't see the sun catcher. I'm very happy to have him here now. It's too bad I don't have other windows that would work, so I'm limited on place to put things that can be back lit. So, anyway I have been seriously thinking, if this is my own art and a beautiful one of a kind why not make more of my own art this way myself. These things are expensive. I was looking into buying some ravens. I know certain types of glass are expensive and that drives up the price especially on bigger sheets. One thing I never used to care for with stained glass was that patterns always seemed so simple and basic. Sometimes down right bad like a child drew them. Yah you can tell when something is a bird, a rose or whatever, but something always seemed weird about it to me. I know you can't get super detailed to get realism in this medium but this just didn't seem right to me. Eventually I found out that you could get more details and hence this budgie was made. The other thing I found boring about all this was the same subject matter, flowers, butterflies, birds (the birds were the only thing that kind kept my interest) and maybe so me marine creatures or landscapes. Ehhhhhhh. But imagine my characters with decent detail in glass? Talk about a cool unique subject matter. Yes, I'm contemplating making Scary Fear and some of the others. I would have to modify my art style on some of them to account for the nature of glass. Nothing super skinny which is typical of my style. So Fear and the others might have to gain a bit of weight. I think I'll have to draw him with fewer feathers too. But it's line work. Basically I'm doing the dreaded inking that I hate so much in my art and then flat colors only. I'm also thinking about making one with Bullet the budgie. I don't know if I want her to be realistic like Phage here or make her cartoon Empress Bullet. The biggest problem with doing Bullet is I don't know how I would make her look like a lacewing. There are white and clear glass pieces of course. But I'd love to find a white with tan makings for the lace pattern. Doesn't have to be exactly like hers (none of this is exact. I know it is all simplified forms of real things) but there has to be something white with tan flecks or streaks. I know there is a learning curve here but I have a strong feeling I can do this. As far as art goes I've always thought of myself as a "drawer". That is, my forte is drawing and digital art. But I have found I'm blessed as an over all artist. I am pretty much good at anything I set my mind to in the art world with few exceptions. Other than my budgie I have also never seen a good budgie stained glass anything. That must change.
Ok now for the story about the fence. Our fence has been falling apart after many storms. Our yard is big and we can't afford to buy new ones ourselves. And if we could we're also not physically built to install anything ourselves. And our insurance is all used up after the roof. We've been praying that God would work something out for us. He always provides for his believers. The roof is another example of that in our lives. Well, one neighbor in the back began to install a new white fence. We love those. That's what we would want all around. Well after that was done the neighbor directly behind us started to install his. But he went a lot slower. He did like three panels then stopped. We were cheering for him to go all the way across. But as more and more storms came our fence began to break more and more. He was even fixing out panels at times. I don't know what happened, maybe his wife got on his case but after months of no work he started up again doing a panel a week. I understand that. Panels are expensive so probably one each paycheck. Finally he finished and then rounded the corner and headed out to his street. We were thrilled. I'd check everyday to see if there was a new post or finished piece. I'd call Chris and tell him about the neighbor's progress on "our new fence". We have a third backyard neighbor and our fence only covers two panels of that. It's falling apart there too but by the time this was over we had around 150 feet of new fence on the longest side of our property. The only thing now is we have a lot of work to take down our crappy rotted wood fence. We still need fence on the sides but those aren't so bad. In face we might be able to reuse the board to fix the sides and maybe even for some other projects that don't require perfect wood.
It's going to take us some time to get the fence down as again we're not built for this kind of work. But demolition is easier than construction. Possibly the jeep can even help with some of this. So we're very happy about this. And on the left of the photo you can see some of that lovely new white fence. But we're still in no position to have chickens. Of course if I could have it my way I'd have 10 foot concrete or brick fences all around the property with a gate like they have in Central America.
Lastly against the wood fence on the left of that photo is a one piece cattle panel trellis Chris and I both installed on Sept 15th. I'm thrilled. I have always wanted an arched arbor I could walk through. It took 4 T posts and we bent the cattle panel between them. I think it's 6 feet wide so it's 7 feet tall. It will be for small to medium pumpkins and gourds. One on each side. We plan to get another panel to extend it and that would be four plants that could go up it. I think it's lovely. I can't wait.
Oh and Whitey has three eggs now. I candled them yesterday as it's been 5 days for the first egg. As I thought, no chick inside. This first clutch may be all duds. I want to strangle Minion.
