New Birds

Those of you on youtube might know that I have two new birds now. I think it was Dec 14 that I went to the vet to get a follow up for Minion. He's all better. The antibiotics cleared him up. Glad that's taken care of. I adopted the parrotlet that was there. I was told he was mean because he was abused and was wild. Also he has a benign tumor on his right wing but is healthy other wise. Also that he didn't eat veggies or pellets much. Also that he was a normal green. Not much else was known about him. I needed a male as a breeder after having lost Melville a few months ago. That sucked btw and I still miss my poor yellow parrot. Oh this one also had no name so at the vet's I named him Wingo because it's the first colorful green thing that popped into my head. You know the street racer from the first Cars movie. So I get him home and realize he's not green. Found out he's a green headed turquoise. Because he had plucked most of his feathers he looked green because of the head and had a grey body of down feathers and a few broken body feathers. Almost changed his name since he's a turquoise. But can't think of anything else. No one else suggested anything and for his bad wing I guess I'll keep him as Wingo. So he also proved that he can eat pellets and he does take veggies. YAY!! He's not wild and vicious. In fact he's grabbble which is great. He is pissy and fake bites but it doesn't hurt it's all an act. The only negative I found about him is that he is afraid of other birds so making him a breeder might be hard. I don't know how old he is. He has a leg band but it wasn't traceable. Would love to find the breeder so I can find out his birthday. So many unknowns, but everything I was told about him seems to be wrong. He's friendly. He knows how to step up. I'm training him to do the Turn Around trick. Also his feathers are growing back. My main goal with this bird is to get all his feathers to come back other than his wing that is permanently damaged. Sadly he and Nautica did not like each other. Nautica did like Melville. This part is not good. I keep accidentally calling him Melville also. I need to stop that.

Here he is in all his vicious glory the day I brought him home. Ha ha. He looks better than this photo already.

Meet Orbitz. The most expensive "normal" green budgie I have ever bought. She's a green opaline but pet stores just list these as "greens". Used to work in my favor but now with unnecessary inflation I paid $29.99 for her. That is stupid. I went to a pet store today that used to the the cheapest and budgies there were $36.99. WTF? This store used to have them at $9.99 during Trump. And the other stores had them as greens for 14.99 and "fancy" for 19.99. Budgies were cheap and easy to buy. It was great. Anyone could get them unlike other parrots. I'm tempted to come out of retirement. With my hand fed babies at $25 (always been my price) I should clean up nicely if word gets out. Everyone would be flocking my way.

Anyway, so Orbitz who I keep accidentally calling Optic. I miss that budgie. I named her after the 90s drink that had little floating balls in it. She a future wife for Blue Brother. Oh that's another problem. You can't find adult budgies in stores. This is my first time buying a budgie since I got Minion and I got him a whole sale. He was a cheap aviary budgie. So I'm taming her and already have her in with Blue Brother. I feel time's ticking though and hope he's still around next year when she matures. I hope they'll bond. This is all about passing on the lacewing gene.

And speaking of pets. I have decided in my mind I will get a doberman. Starting in the new year I will try to save all my money. Right now I'm focused on buying supplies. I've made an amazon list HERE. I've already got some things like bowls, leash and collar, a bed. I know I'll need more than one bed and puppies chew things up so I like the cheap ones I found. So hopefully next year I can meet this goal. I also hope to save for other big expenses like jeep mods. Also my jeep is almost paid off. I think it will be done in 2022. It is a year behind Bruce the truck.
Lastly here is a follow up on the ebay guy that yanked me around with the Arnold figure. If you didn't see or reply check out This post.
Ok have a good one guys. Oh and I'm going to be late with some Christmas gifts and cards this year. For the card I didn't finish the new design in time. So my icon of Bullet is this year's card in the wreath.

Loss

Chris is doing better. He's two days ahead of me. I'm better too but not really well enough to be up and doing anything. I lost some tadpoles during this which I'm not happy about. Transitioning from tadpole to frog always seems to have risks even if the tadpole was eating and healthy. I don't know why. I hate that. but the worst thing was today my parrotlet Melville died. I was well enough to do bird dishes. Chris went out to the patio to feed birds and tells me "Melville died." I couldn't believe it when I heard it. What? Why?? He was totally fine yesterday. What I can tell is a snake got on the patio, tried to eat him, couldn't and left. His feathers were matted with dried saliva but he has wide shoulders so the snake was not able to finish him. We looked everywhere but could not find the snake. We don't know how it got in or out on our patio. It's been a long time since something like this has happened. I'm very upset. Melville was a nice bird. He acted like a jerk a times and was loud but he did not bite and you could pet and grab him. I had plans to breed him with Nautica. Nautica liked him and he could talk a little bit. He could say "Ahoy Melville." I'm very upset. Sudden unexpected deaths are the worst. And I had forgotten how expensive parrotlets are. I don't know how I was able to afford him. I won't buy from the breeder I got him from since it was not a good experience but out of curiosity I went to her site. Yike!! How did I ever afford him? And even if I could get another one it would be a baby. I think adults are hard to find so that would be another year wasted waiting to breed. Parrotlets live longer than budgies at least so if I want to try again I can. When I get better I NEED to build the nestbox for Whitey and Minion. Time's wasting and I can't let the lacewing gene go extinct. I think I'm a lot better physically but I'm very crappy feeling right now after the loss of my bird. That snake better not show up because I will chop its head off.
EDIT: Snake has been dispatched.

So things are going well. Been very busy. Mostly the bathroom have been annoying. Chris got the old sink out over the weekend but it was glued to the wall so heavily. We're not sure how to get the glue off as using a metal scraper hasn't worked. I'm hoping to borrow some tools but that has majorly slowed everything down as far as starting to paint the darn thing. The master bathroom is all patched and I should start to prime it with white today then work on repairing all the bamboo wallpaper in there. What's annoying is that we need to have both done because we only want the plumber out here once so we only pay him once so it's not good having a hold up.

Art wise I have been very busy. I'm thrilled I got my first interleaved KJV Bible. That means one blank page between every normal page. Lots of room for art. I like my other art one but I've been getting annoyed with the lack of room and that when I want to draw a favorite verse something else is already drawn on it. The only thing is since this is not an offical journaling Bible I'll have to test all my pens and paints to see if it can handle it. The pages are very thin.

I did get some Faber Castell watercolor pencils which I'm happy about. I have to learn how to use them. But I might do better with them than with regular water colors. I used my cheap water colors just to try out a first page.

This is not bad but they are chalky and pale. I think this could have been better with better paints. So I hope the pencils will work for me. I did not draw those words or the Earth. That was already there.

We went to the pet store to pick up some supplies for the birds. We bought new water bottles but unfortunately they don't work. I'm disappointed because I love the colors but they constantly leak. I'm glad I noticed when I did and that I had a cup under them because a third of their water had gone out and the birds were drinking from the cups. But we got a new hanging ring toy I've seen other birds use. Minion was afraid at first but then liked it when I put Nautica on it and he got on. But Nautica wasn't too keen on it because Minion was bothering her. I finally put her there alone and she chewed the ropes but I don't think it's her thing.

The bullet journal is coming along. I'm almost done catching up on the older months. I decided to do summaries of what happened in them and thank goodness for LJ as I was able to get lots of stuff two write about. I'm still working on April then I should be done. Nov and Dec will get one page because I'm out of pages in this book. I'm hoping some art supplies I have ordered from over seas will come in soon. I got one order coming from Japan that's a bunch of budgie stickers and tape. The other is from England. Can't wait.

I'm very happy with how things are coming along. A few weeks ago I bought a linen cabinet to use as a bird pantry. I keep all the bird food, toys and dishes in it for the outside flock. My birds in my room, Minion and Nautica, have a small wall size one. I bought a second one because I love these so much to actually use for us in the bedroom. We have a black one I inherited from my mom but I've never liked it. The first one was easy to build. I only needed Chris to hold the door so I could get it on. But this one though the same model had damage in shipping. Luckily I was able to fix it with wood glue. It has a few cracks but I can fill those in and paint them. I'm glad it worked and it gave me way more problems than the first one. But it's finally done. Renovation has started for Chris's bathroom too. I bought him a new sink vanity, new mirror medicine cabinet (the old one broke and I had to) and a replacement cabinet all in white which will look great with the ocean Subnatica theme. I also bought the first paints from Lowes. I have lots of drywall repair to do first but then I hope to start on the fun part which is the painting. For now I will make just a blue gradient and a simple flat ocean floors. Later on I will add detail. Putting all the cabients back on the wall will let me know how much room I have to play with too so I'm not going to bother drawing rocks and plants because I don't want them to be covered up as I don't know where the new furniture will go exactly.

Here's what I'm hoping to draw on the main big wall.

Black Moon

Jul. 31st, 2019 08:21 am
thagirion: (Default)
Hey guys. Things have been going very well. July was a great month. Yesterday I went out to Treasure Island and went shelling on the beach. I found some neat stuff but not too many shells. It was mostly a bivalve (claims, oysters, scallops) beach. I don't find those very interesting. I am most interested in gastropod or marine snails. I found only two. I will make a video because I had a very good time and I went back to the shell store and bought some gastropods that are native here to make up for the lack of ones I could find. I'm hoping Chris and I can take a few days off to got to Sanibel Island which is supposed to be the best place in Florida for shells.

Minion my budgie is doing great. He's not a coward anymore and has become very friendly and bonded towards me. He's a talking budgie now too. I'm thrilled. So funny because I bought him to be a breeder but ended up keeping him in my room. He became a pet and I never expected to have him become a talking budgie either. Two bonuses. I don't know if I'll breed him. His second beard dot has come in and I hope he gets a pretty dot necklace once all four dots are in. Here's what he's learned to say so far

Budgie
I love you
Come 'ere
I can talk can you fly?
Gimme a kiss
baby
MUWA! (kiss sound)
Ahoy there
Beware

Beware is part of a phrase. I was trying to teach him "Beware of the black hole". Phage used to say that, but Minion doesn't get the rest of it. We're also working on "Welcome to Jurassic Park." So far he's learned to say Jurassic but pronounces it badly so still working on that. I'm also teaching him "Fear is here!" I think I've heard him say Fear once but also poorly pronounce. So we shall keep at it.
Unfortunately there's been a role reversal. Nautica has become scared and runs from me. I have no idea why as I have treated both the same, give them treats and attention and out time. I don't know if this first molt is affecting her but she's not so nice right now. I don't get it, but I knew parrotlets are a difficult species.

Today I am waiting on a new entertainment set to come for my room. We've been using folding tables for my game systems and other electronics and there's not much room. This will help things look much nicer, be better organized and I'll have more room to display things like shells or planets.

And here are two videos of my John Hammond things I got this week. I love these.

I'm so happy with how my Jurassic collection is coming along. Just wish the cane wasn't so stinky. Stinky things have been a problem lately. I will post more on that later. Time to get the day starts.

Oh lastly the subject of this post. Today is a black moon. That's like a blue moon but with new moons. Two new moons in the same month. Can only work if there are 31 days in the month. Too bad I can't get to a beach as new moons and full moons have the highest high tides and lowest low tides. But that's why I went yesterday. Close enough to a new moon.

I got a cool cabinet the other day. Been wanting this for ever. It's to organize my bird supplies. It's for a bathroom medicine cabinet but I tend to end up using most things not for their intended purposes. Here is a video showing how I put it together.

https://youtu.be/apjfAAaJa9s

I found out something weird about youtube. If you make a locked post and you're not logged in you don't see the day of the calendar lit up even if that's the only post you made. I don't like that because then it's not accurately logging you posted something even if it's locked.

Yesterday was like another birthday for me. Well this whole month is one big celebration be it birthday or anniversary. Chris worked a half day then came home and we just hung around. His parents had invited us to a birthday meal at Alexander's steak house. Chris and I both love that place. He had to drive me as I still didn't get my new drivers license. This was the year to renew it and though I sent it in two weeks ahead of time it's a government run organization so it took way longer. I finally got that today so I'm legally able to drive again. YAY. But it's ugly. It has a retro look. The old license was so Florida with the sun set on the beach and the green header at the top. This looks like a 70s government document alright. Boring. So we had a really nice meal there and I got two more Amazon cards. I still don't know what I want to get with them or hold on to them until Christmas to get something big. I really want an entertainment set for my game systems and dvd player. Not sure I can hold out that long or for the next sale holiday. We'll see. So after that we came home and saw a lovely storm. That night we watched Danger Bay and talked.

Today some delayed gifts finally came in as well as stuff I treated myself to. I got my first half sider Nautilus. I didn't know there was such a thing. I know about white ones and normal ones but this is the best of both worlds. One side is polished white. This is quickly one of my faves. I'm not a fan of polished or pearlized nautiluses but I've never seen one like this. Even the natural side has a nice gloss that makes it nice to touch. I don't have a good pic of it yet but here it is in the new budgie cabinet.

It looks very nice there but that may not be its permanent home. With all this nautilus collecting I'm doing I want to make some changes to the house. I was having a conversation with [profile] jokerforever about making part of the house into a mini natural history museum. I already own neat stuff like a cat skull, shells, feathers, dried pitchers, minerals etc. So yes, having something in that's patterned after a museum and nicely organized would be great. When I was a kid I remember having collected feathers and things and taped them to card board and named them with scientific name and location. I had one side of my room set up and remember thinking I wanted a real display in my house. Well I'll keep that promise to myself. I was the kind of kid that I made serious long term promises like that and people thought it was just my imagination. No I'm making good on those now. So I want to eventually get some nice glass display cases.

Since I'm getting into shell collecting I found this journal showing a room set up this way that's so nice.
http://www.iloveshelling.com/blog/2014/10/15/the-rambo-seashell-shellaboratory/
Of course mine won't be just for shell. But I love the white and blue thing going on here. I am planning to get those white book shelves and replace the black ones I have.

So I also got John Hammond's cane today.

Here is a close up of what I call "the egg".

And here is the whole thing. Ok the good stuff first. It looks really good. It's the right length and the handle part looks like bones or bamboo. The fly is in great shape. I love the bubbles in it too. All these are unique and no two look alike. It is also a functioning cane. I can put my weight on it, though it will be on display and not to be used. I already have my walking staff for that. Now what I don't like about it.

The worst thing is the egg is slightly scratched. The top is cloudy and the side with the bug's face has some deep scratch marks. Second, the egg is too small I think. Have a look at these scenes from the movie.

And last complaint is the texture. I thought it would be smooth feeling like bamboo or glossy bones. I was expecting it to be like my staff. Nope, it's rough nasty wood fiber feel. Good thing I'm not using it as a real cane. As annoying as these things are I'm not going to ask for an exchange or refund. This is the best cane out there. Better than the official replica that costs way more. Not that this was cheap. Far from it. It is a display piece so I can live with the flaws. Oh also with my bug had all his legs. He only has two instead of six. But the pose is perfect. So it's not an exact replica but darn close.

OK, switching gears now to birds

Lotuses

Jun. 29th, 2019 09:02 am
thagirion: (Default)
I've hurt my right shoulder. I was working on the next driving compilation yesterday and the way the mouse is on my desk is not good. I had my hand out for hours and last night my shoulder started hurting badly. I have a torn rotatory cuff in that shoulder and it probably set off the fibro too. It hurts most in my shoulder blade. So I did not sleep well and it still hurts. I have the mouse in my lap but it's still uncomfortable. I remember when I sat on the couch the mouse was besides me so lower than my legs. I may have to not use my main computer for a day or two which would be very hard on me. Use my tablet or just game as Chris suggested.

But it's not like there isn't plenty of other things to do. Nautica and Minion keep me busy. I could go back to training Nautica. The lotuses are doing great. Lots of flowers right now. I love how fast they grow but wow I feel I have to keep updating my videos, but don't want to bore and flood my watchers. But it does look totally different in just a day or two. Today my first Dreaming of 6th Dynasty opened which is a pale yellow lotus. My Rhynchostyllis retusa orchid is almost opened. I'm not an orchid person but when I saw this way back on my first visit to Atlanta I had to have it. I like pretty much anything in that genus and luckily unlike nepenthes there are only three species. Unfortunately I have some bad news. I have no more fish. My female Molly just died one day. I found her floating. The lovely white male I have had since all this started that had survived so much just vanished. He's gone. I blame a racoon because my gourd plant next to the pond was trampled. I hate racoons.

I'm looking forward to the 4th next week. I don't know what we're going to do yet but I'd love to go back to Fred Howard Park. And I'm looking forward to my birthday too. I've updted my Amazon wishlist. Hope I'll get some neat stuff off of that.
The black hole strikes again in my house. I've lost me very cute budgie keychain. I worry I might have unknowingly thrown it out. And they are gone on Etsy. That bugs me so much. Also I had some numbers for my mailbox that also vanished. It does make me wonder if those ended up in the same place together but they've been lost a long time. I can order more of those at least.
.
thagirion: (Default)
Yesterday I let my birds play with my phone. Nautica has really fallen in love with it. She likes to look at pics of herself and other budgies. She pushes the screen and bites the lens and I happened to get this one awesome photo of her.

This looks like a scene from the hungry shark game. I was on the phone with ACTipton when this happened and we were laughing so hard.

Few more pics )

thagirion: (Default)
It's been a busy last few days. Yesterday was a day off and we really enjoyed it. I went on one job with Chris and finished reading most of my Parrotlet book.I know a little more about breeding them now but still unsure if that's what I want to do in the future. Still bugs me Melville is taking up space and eating food. What a mistake that was. I love Nautica and may not want to breed them together since there's risk involved to the females of egg binding. Even without a male I worry so much about her coming into maturity at one year since they don't need a male to lay eggs. I had enough of that with Punkin my pigeon and some scares with Bullet that luckily she pulled through. But Natuica is doing well. I have taught her to hang and to wave. We're working on shake which she doesn't like. But because she has learned hang she finally knows how to use the ladders on the cage to get back down and into her own cage. Before she would just jump off the play guy which is like jumping off a four story building. Then she'd climb up the ladder on the ground.

As you can see I made a new icon of her. I have regretted not making one of Bullet though I had tons of pics. I don't know why I never did and to do so now would just be a bad thing I think. It would make me down to use her icon. Not making that mistake with Nautica so here is a pic of her. Though Chris suggested I should draw her as the Empress and use that. That could work since that's a fictional cartoon version of her. One thing I don't like about Natuica is I can't touch and pet her. She does not like it and bites. I also can't brag her like I can most budgies. I can even grab Melville and he doesn't bite or struggle. But perhaps I can train her to like it by using a skewer and the reward method. It will definitely take a long time but it could work. When her first molt comes I'd like to be able to preen her with my fingers.

Here is the pic I used as the icon. I noticed my camera really pics up the blue in the room from the walls and the cages. They come out over saturated in blue and green. So from now on if the photo is worth it they will be color corrected. This one looks like real life finally.

More pics of birds and garden )

Well the lotuses aren't the only things growing fast. So are the weeds. My poor front garden is not as nice as it was in Spring and I can't keep up with it. Grass has popped up everywhere. Disgusting bugs are out for summer. Stink bugs, leaf footed bugs and for the first time this year a type of ridged black beetle has attacked my tomatoes. My four plants are a loss. I got to harvest some tomatoes but the plants are bug eaten and diseased. I have new plants on stand by but worry I would be wasting them planting them. I did some research and found out the problem is other than cherry tomatoes, tomatoes don't grow in Florida in summer. All this time I've been planting on a northern schedule the rest of the country follows. But I've now realized the "typical garden info" does not apply to FL. We're totally different from everywhere else. Here's what I learned about growing.

* North Florida - Tomatoes may be planted between February and April
* Central Florida - between January - March
* South Florida - between November and February. They may be planted for late season crop between August - September.

I'm Central Fl so I planted in April. Way too late. Give this time table to any other state and they'd laugh because you'd be hitting their winter. August is the worst month but perhaps bugs will be on the way out by Sept. I could try for end of August if I can keep my current plants alive. Cherry tomatoes are year round.

I also found out about a native tomato that grows in the heat called Everglades. It's a tiny cherry. I'll try to get some of those seeds as well as a small sized tomato called Floridade. Developed in Dade county which is Miami to withstand the heat. Well heat is fine but bugs are another matter.

Last thing. Chris downloaded the game on PS4 called Hungry Shark World. [livejournal.com profile] jokerforever, I think you told me about this game a while back. I was a cellphone game that I guess is now on PS4. So much better that you can have a big screen and a controller. Anyway you play as different cartoon sharks and level up by eating to unlock other sharks. You find things to wear that give you different abilities. The art style is very funny and cool. It's definitely a dark funny game. Chris got as far as the Megamouth shark and unlocked the arctic. I may play this and start my own game. Oh gosh that means if I do everything will go on hold. Haha.

Got two videos I want to share.

I love how fast she flaps on her perch. She's such a happy girl and I'm proud that I have been taking good care of her.

I have another driving compilation finished too. I think this is my best one though it's short. I had fun adding animations and funny songs and sound effects.

So things are finally getting back to normal here after Peregrine left. I've started training Nautica to do tricks. I've never trick trained any bird so this will be a first. I am finding that doing so causes our bond to strengthen and she's learning to associate her little perch with good things. When I pick it up to clean the table she gets all excited. This is good. So she has mastered the command "Turn Around". We are now working on "Hang" and "Flip". Hang is her hanging upside down from the perch. Flip is an extension of Hang where she will come back up the other side of the perch. So far she sort of gets Hang and can do about a 270 degree flip but hasn't figured out how to come back up. Here is a short video of her doing Turn Around.

I'm also trying to catch up on driving compilations. This is the one for Feb 2019 so I'm finally in this year. I'm very happy with the editing on this one.

https://youtu.be/vVDybSoisbw

Chris and I love watching dashcam and crash videos. I've noticed I'm relying less on text and visual effects like adding little traffic lights and arrows in this. The reason is we both are now better at anticipating what will happen and turning our radios down and narrating. That way if we say "Red light runner" I don't have to put a little red light to make things easier to see like before. Of course we can't always do that but it helps and that's less background music I have to find which is becoming very hard without having to use the same pieces over and over again. Dashcam Australia is still our fave though and then trying to find decent ones of stuff from US and Canada.

The other day yahoo finally got me. I have been avoiding the update to the email. I hate the new inbox. I kept saying No for months and blocking the pop ups with ad blockers and such. But they finally got me where they didn't even give me a choice. I guess they figured out how I was holding out and that I knew how to switch back to the old style. That's gone. Sucks but I'm proud of how long I resisted.

I miss doing art but still can't because I don't have a scanner. I'm also getting really sick of the "art collection" I have amassed over the decades as a traditional artist first. I wish I could draw 100% digital but I'm starting to think that I need to make good scans, keep the good digital in work and crazy enough just throw out the paper version. I'm quite happy with how I've gotten junk out of my life. I don't consider my art junk. I'm my biggest fan after all, but it's eating up my space and really in the end I'm a digital artist. I don't know. It's something I need to think about. Not sure how to go about it. Once I know I have several back ups perhaps do an end of the year toss out? I don't know.

I just edited this short video. I'm very happy with how funny it turned out. Amazing how editing always takes way longer than what a video is.

Nautica Body Slams Minion.

So yesterday Chris and I had a nice day off. We got a lot accomplished. We did some yard work and for me I'm about 40% done with wallpapering the bathroom. It's amazing how it's looking so much like Jurassic Park. I will have progress pics soon. But for now no wall is completely done so that's why I haven't done any yet.

I got my disk drive the other day so I have now installed my art tablet. I just need to get a new scanner and I should be back in business with my art.
I'm impatiently awaiting for plants to bloom too. My first lotus is still a bud though it has gotten bigger. And my two A. paeonifolius are still buds too but I think they also have gotten bigger. Gosh hurry up already. Wish these guys would open.

I've made some progress on my art/computer room. I've started to paint the trim white. The walls will be a bright sky blue. I have picked up a gallon of Valspar's Sea Wave if you want to look that color up. But first I have to finish the trim. One nice thing about his project is I don't care at all about the carpet. So I'm not bothering to lay down newspaper. It's getting paint all over it but the carpet will eventually be replaced with tile or vinyl that looks like tile. If I can't afford the tile then I will get the cheaper vinyl. We went to Ikea. Not fun. We were excited about going until we remembered why we hate that place. It's a rat maze and you're forced to go through all the parts. I guess it makes people do impulse buys and sells more. There's no one around to help and when you do find someone it's like you're bothering them. No one knows about what's on the website even if yous how them on the phone. And other customers are annoying and in the way. BUT we did find my desk. It has a white table top and blue metal legs. It will be so nice. But I can't put it together until I finish with the painting. The worst part is the book shelves and books. There's nowhere to put them at the moment. I'll figure something out. I always do. I've gotten rid of a lot of books, but need to get rid of more still. It would be great if I could condense my collection down to one shelf. I don't know if I can but I will try. I guess I should toss all the text books though I don't want to let some of them go. I don't know. We'll see.

On the pet front, Nautica is driving me insane. She won't wean although she knows how to eat. I've seen her cracking and eating pellets. She ignores other birds eating so having Melville or Minion eat with her only helps sometimes. I found out though that the bowls were too small. She doesn't like that and some progress was made when I put her in Minion's cage and she ate with him in his bigger cat dish. So I will get more cat dishes. But it doesn't always work and I think it has to do with parrotlets not being social like most parrots. Budgies and almost everything else are social eaters. I think this makes things much harder. I think she will be very slow to wean, but I want her on a healthy diet. I don't want her eating seed mixes which I'm sure she would wean to instantly. Learning to eat veggies is not going well either. But so long as I can get her on pellets that will be good. Without her being weaned she can't be trained because she doesn't get the concept of treats and rewards. At least Minion and Melville are weaned on pellets. Other than that she's a great little pet.

I have learned how Lotuses are sold here in the US. Spring is the big sale and shipping time and then there are no more the rest of the year. So I got into this right at the start of the season. And not knowing this some of the types I wanted have sold out all over the nation. I'm not happy. Just three but I really wanted

Chinese Red Beijing - large
Real Beauty - micro
Big versicolor - large

I keep checking. I don't know maybe one will come back, but they only sell the tubers when they are dormant and things are coming out of dormancy now. I did pick up some good ones for this first year though. My little collection is quite nice. But these would have been great to have. Especially Chinese Red Beijing.

So that's what's been going on. I'll be posting pics of my room slowly. I really need to get the projector too because I want to draw Fear overlooking the city on the wall over my desk.

Something is wrong with Live Journal's photo hosting right now. I hope it's not that I'm on Windows 10. I can't upload images. When I try it shows a window with a folder select and a save button at the bottom. If you push the save nothing happens. I thought it was because I'm on the new computer but I tried it on my tablet and the right window pops up but the browse button is clear and you can't push it. I've sent a help request to tech support. This is very annoying. I have to host the photos on dreamwidth and they only give you 500 mb. That's nothing and I don't know if I can buy more space or if I'm stuck with that. I can make icon file sizes smaller. Been doing that since the 90s. I hope LJ fixes this issue. I need my space. Luckily I have several DW accounts I can add them all up for hosting, though I haven't logged onto some in decades.

So on to the post. I'm loving my new pets. They are lots of fun. Nautica is this mustard yellow with a little bit of green on her rump. She reminds me of the second budgie I ever had as a kid that was a heavy yellow recessive pied with no black and tiny amount of green on the tummy and rump. She was a mean nasty budgie but I loved her. My first budgie was a recessive pied the color that Phage was and hence why that will always be my fave budgie color.

Here is Nautica on my finger after a feeding. She's all scruffy and messed up. These pics are older and out dated already. I need to take some new ones, but where to host them?

Minion in Nautica's cage preening her.

They go into each other's cages though he mostly goes into hers since she has more toys. I'm hand feeding her three times a day. It was four times when I first brought her home and they seller had told me it was twice a day. No way. She needs more. She's very smart and I can grab her and pet her back but she won't let me scratch her face. Sigh, just like Bullet. I can scratch her as well as Minion does. Don't know how to convince her of that. Minion has broken nearly all his tail feathers. They were breaking when I got them. He's lousy at landing and jumping. I clipped both my birds and they are way easier to train and manage this way. I bought a large colorful ladder and have already taught them how to use it in case they fall off the cage. The stand for the cage is so nice. Ha, Nautica just fell as I type this. But she got back up. I'll film the set up soon. I found videos and pics of Nautica on the facebook page from the petstore and downloaded them. So nice to see my baby that little. When I bought her she was in a little clear box with a yellow male, I guess her brother, and a cockatiel. I found pics of the male too so I know those are the same birds as they were posted a few days before the show. It bugs me I don't don't her birthday and parantage though. No leg band and they told me they didn't breed her but got her from a breeder and they don't know which one. Something's fishy about that. Sloppy record keeping if it's even true. I don't know of any breeders that ell unweaned babies in bulk. It's rather unheard of. Most of us are reluctant to sell unweaned babies. A lot of these sellers are Spanish and I have noticed they don't get it about pet care the way we do, that they aren't just a business product to be sold. I've dealt with a lot of them and hate how impersonal they are with the birds. So good thing she ended up with me.

On the computer front, I'm loving my new computer. I love how quiet it is and how colorful. I ordered the pink and black chair. Can't wait to get it. They say it will arrive Monday and is coming from Fortworth Texas. I hope I will like it as far as comfort and durability. I hate that these chairs are online only so you can't try them out in a store. I bought white paint and hope to paint the trim or base board around the room. Then I can prepare to paint the whole room light blue.

I'm loving the lotus plants I have gotten too. What fun they are. My Space 36 Lotus is doing great and my fastest grower. My First Fall Lotus is older but only has two leaves. Space is producing five I think and the first two are bigger than when they opened. I can't wait for the first areal leaves. I also got some feeder guppies and two silver mollies for mosquito control. Chris bought those mosquito cakes and I am floored by how they work. There were lots of larva in one of the pots and I tossed in a cake over night. The next morning they were all dead but the plants and fish are unharmed. But with a lack of mosquitoes I have to feed the fish now so I got some flake food. My silver mollies are beautiful and I will take videos of them soon too. I picked up two other lotus breeds. I got a large one named Dream of Sixth Dynasty. It is a large yellow flower verging on green. Very rare color. And I got one called Love Sick Red that is a medium plant but has bright red flowers. Bright red is kind of rare. I see many called Red something but they are pink. Same for purple. They are pink. I don't think purple is in the genes for lotus the way it is for water lilies. I'm loving having found the plant store Bergen Water Gardens. I found them searching for Nepenthes but they have gotten me hooked on Lotus. This last order they send me an extra tuber of Sixth Dynasty. It's funny these plants are Asian and all mostly from China so they have funny names like that. I'm not into Asian stuff but I do like these plants from a botanical and scientific standpoint.

It's been cold for us with nights in the 50s and upper 40s. I hope that will end for good already. I've put all my plants out and don't want to bring them in on an emergency frost or anything. It's almost May for Pete's sake.

Happy early Easter if I don't post tomorrow. Easter totally snuck up on me this year. I partially decorated for it but am not ready. It's a shame because it's one of my two most fave holidays. I feel I got an early Easter gift with Nautica my yellow baby chick.

I finally got my new computer last night. Chris went to pick it up on his way home from work. I was not on the way and it would have been to hard to pick me up and take me. I'm very happy with it and as you can see in this video I'm also very happy with my new birds.

So I've named the parrotlet Nautica. Chris came up with that. And I named the budgie Minion. I'm excited about working on so many videos too. I'm so behind and now have to catch up. I've spent the day today doing my fave things. Working with my plants, playing with my birds and doing computer work.

The weather was nice today though a bit cold in the morning with lows in the upper 50s. I think I can say Spring is here now. I've been seeing phlox along the road. The Tabebuia trees are in bloom, even my fallen one. So I think it's save to start putting all the plants back outside. I can't wait to plant my American Beauty and Frankie's red dragon fruit cuttings. And finally all the plants can go back outside. Today I started treating my nepenthes for scale might as I have an infestation of those blasted things. This is what the sprayer that Joker got me is for. I hope I can kill off those little jerks and they'll never come back. Here's the article on how to treat scale on nepnethes.

I got a new hybrid today. I got N. merrilliana x campanulata. Both lowlanders so I hope it will get the size and pink color of merrilliana with the wide mouth of campanulata. It's a baby plant so it doesn't look like much at the moment.

The new parrot is doing ok. I haven't been too happy with how afraid he is. He seems cage bound which is not good. When I put my hand in I have to grab him because he won't step up. He just runs away. And when I have him out of the cage he tries to fly back in. He's done better when I take him into other room. Tonight in Chris's room he showed some progress but I want him to play with his toys more and not run from my hand in the cage. From what I've seen of the videos the breeder hugs and kisses them too much. I don't think anything is wrong with kissing pets but when it's all the time that the bird is in your face and covered they become afraid to be far away and is counter productive. This bird has not learned how to be independent. I want a companion and a friend. Not a clingy needy bird. Hate clingy people and I guess I don't like it in animals either. Nor cowards. I chose a parrotlet because they are supposed to be so brave. I know I haven't given him enough time but I just have a feeling. I don't know, but I'm worried. Also been trying to teach him how to use the water bottle. I ordered a bag of food. Can't wait for it to arrive this Wed.

ACTipton called me today and we talked a lot about birds. I mentioned these old classic budgie toys that used to be around in the 80s. It was a plastic budgie on a spring with clawed feet. I had several as a kid. Here's a pick.

The problem with them was the plastic peg in the spring was too short so they'd fall off once the budgie punched it and could never be fixed. Later on a design came out where it had a ball underneath as a counter weight. But I loved these original ones because they looked the most realistic and I loved how they bobbed when they did work right. I had one as a toy for myself. Don't like the new versions that are out.

While I was looking for this pic I came across something I didn't know existed and now I want it. I'm impressed with how the Japanese love budgies and small pet birds. There are these little capsule figures that are budgie mushrooms.

Who would have thought these two things would combine so well. So budgies and cockatiels that are mushrooms and wearing hats. This is so cute and I'm going to try to track these down. The one thing annoying about Japanese figures is they only have a one year run. I don't know what year these are from but they might not make these anymore. I'm so glad I got my budgie charms and budgie pillows from Japan when I did years ago because there are none left and they're super rare now. Hum, I see these are from 2014. Yes these will be very hard to track down.

New Pet

Ok guys I went and picked up my new Parrotlet today. He's very shy and scared. Haven't seen that fearlessness that everyone talks about but he's a new bird and been through a lot. Taken from his mom, a long car ride and a big new cage with toys. The breeder told me he's never had a big cage or lots of toys so I'm sure all of this is overwhelming. Poor thing. He'll like it in time. After the video I left him in the cage and only took him out once. He jumps a lot so we'll have to work on staying on my finger and stepping up within the cage. I don't have the right food yet either. I was told he's on Roudybush pellets but non of the stores carry it locally. I drove all the way to Petco because the website said in stock but it was not in stock. So I'll have to order it on Amazon. For now he's got Zupreem pellets for cockatiels and seed which I would rather he not eat. I'll see if I can pick up some nutriberries tomorrow for food and for treats. So here's a short video.

I hope he will grow into a brave feisty bird. Not a fan of timid quiet birds that don't move. But I can see he has potential.

It's taken me three days to recover. I've been so tired since I got back. I hope by tomorrow I'll have normal energy again. It seems it takes me three days to recover from a trip. I'm sure it has to do with being an introvert as well. The Mr. Burns icon was perfect for me the last few days. I'm slowly trying to get my routine back online too. Chris is better too but also came home early as he's not fully recovered yet. I got my plant order in the mail today that I mailed myself. It was funny seeing a package in Chris's name with my writing and the two addresses the same. Got three hybrids of truncatas. truncata x aristolochides, truncata x tentaculata and truncata x vogelii. The last one I'm most interested in as I've seen a video of someone that has an adult plant. Huge long skinny pitchers with mottles. I had forgotten I had truncata x tentaculata already. Oops. Now I have two. But my other one isn't doing so great so maybe it's good I have a back up. The weather has been so nice that I put those outside on the shelves along with half the other nepenthes. I'm seeing signs on Spring here like the tabebuia tees are in bloom and phlox are starting to pop up along the roads. They are gorgeous when in full bloom.

But the biggest news is that I placed an order for a parrotlet today. But instead of being happy it got me really sad. I thought I was done with that and I had mourned Bullet properly already but I've just been thinking about her and was very sad today. This new bird won't replace her but poor guy has a lot to live up to as that's the big void he's filling. Also new species for me. I'm not sure what to expect exactly. I hope they'll be bold and feisty like some videos I have watched. I wish I could just see a bunch of babies in a flock and pic one after observing. I wasn't even sure what color yet. But I chose a yellow one. Wish I could have afforded a turquoise or something really colorful, but I love yellow too in birds. So tomorrow I may go to the pet store and buy some supplies like toys and his food. I get to pick him up on Sunday. That will be great. For now he'll live in Bullet's old cage which is 24" x 16" x 16". Those are the minimum dimensions for a parrotlet and eventually I plan to upgrade the cage to something bigger. A new friend for me and hopefully by having a new bird to give my love to I can stop hurting about Bullet. Oh and his name will be Ahab. I hope he'll fit his name. Though Bullet didn't fit hers like I wanted her to. I named her Bullet so she would fly like a bullet but she was always a bad flyer. Haha. Well this guy I don't care about flying. He'll be clipped when I get him anyway. I hope he'll talk. I know they don't talk as clear as budgies. They have very bad voices but I hope I can teach him some words clearly. I guess must learn phrases and words are
Ahab
I love you
Come 'ere
Gimmie a kiss
Pretty Bird
Arrr
Walk the Plank
Ahoy there

Today is our 23rd anniversary. We celebrated yesterday because it was a day off. We had a very nice day though I'm still up and down about Bullet. I haven't finished my journal but went ahead and made the Feb update because I had to start writing in the layouts.

https://youtu.be/bnOTx8j1FdQ

This will be so nice if I can get around to coloring it. Got a bunch of errands to run and be finished with by Thursday night. I hope I can do it all. I'm not sure I'll have time to draw or do any other fun things like that.

I found this great 18 minute documentary on Parrotlets on youtube. It was very informative for some of the details I did not know about this species like it's a bird best kept alone because they are aggressive and can kill other birds. I love how opposite it is to the wrong advice they give about budgies that you should have at least two. People that have two Parrotlets have two cages so each bird gets their own space.

https://youtu.be/Z4MB-M5y-G0

I still haven't decided what color I want. I have narrowed it down to light yellow or turquoise. I hope none of those are too expensive. I'm not used to such small birds being so expensive. I've also narrowed it down to two names. Ahab or Starbuck. Both names from Moby Dick. I was very tempted to get an American white which is all white with black eyes. I talked to Chris about this and he said I should start fresh whole different new bird. Yes it looks like Bullet but it won't ever be Bullet and I shouldn't do that to myself. As lovely as the whites are I think he's right so it's yellow or turquoise then.
