Admittedly, I do donate to Malteser, but even that is just a low amount, as I do know enough about the political reality of poor countries to know that a donation is not quite as effective, if governments are corrupt and the people have no access to any basic ressources. The issues are mostly man-made, and to solve them you need to get rid of certain individuals and ensure that they are not replaced by another hydra's head. Shanglong does actually put it quite well, it does not help at all and is actually often taken by those corrupt systems, basically reversing the effect. Which is basically proving your point, I am not just throwing money at a problem in hopes they go away. Except in Final Fantasy V, since there throwing money at enemies does a ton of damage mid-game. In the real world, it is much more complicated.
What really makes me angry however are those people that would use the sense of pity for a cheap buck. I noticed it in Halle a lot, where a lot of women wearing a specific set of clothing sat on the street and begged for money. Similar things with a woman approaching me and telling a sob-story, and what not. I just say I got no cash, and then they move on. Yet, like Rahula, it is something I find disgusting out of my sense of human decency and of course because it is fraud.
So yeah, donating money is a kind thing in theory, and a horrible mess in practice.
Now, sink holes, because I am more comfortable talking about that then the sink holes created by donations. It is funny really, considering the traits of limestone in this. The ground here for example consists mostly of clay,so despite having a lot of aquifers (we are very much dependend on them), especially close to the ocean, sinkholes are something you almost never hear about in local news. It is quite fascinating really, as I now also learned more about the geology of the area I live in. Florida is fascinating in regards to how the factors create a potential for things to sink in the ocean like the city of Atlantis. Kind of a pity that Atlanta is not in your state, that would have made for a perfect punchline. It is nonetheless an interesting phenomenon, which definitely is fun to learn about.
